March thru November: WNY Ovarian Cancer Project 2014 “Cancer Answers” Series: Through out 2014 we will be holding a series of programs relative to cancer survivors, that feature experts from within our community to talk about issues pertinent to our daily lives. All programs are free and will be held at the American Red Cross 786 Delaware Ave. (Corner of Summer Street) Buffalo, New York 14209 Time: 6:00pm to 8:00pm. April 1st: Nutrition: “Don’t tell me what not to eat, tell me what to eat!” We all know that eating healthy is a way to help prevent cancer...but now that you have cancer what should you eat? Is it only green smoothies, green tea and organic for us? Cancer patients are bombarded with the media & well meaning folks about what to eat now that they’ve had a diagnosis of the Big C. In this program you will learn from the experts, what to eat, some great meal ideas for both you and your family, and how to do it without breaking your budget.
June 3rd: Understanding Chemotherapy Side Effects: What are the causes of chemotherapy side effects? How to manage; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, hair loss, pain, neuropathy, mouth sores, and more. You will get practical tips from experts on how to deal with these and other short and long-term side effects.
August 5th: Complementary Medicine: "What's quackery, what's not" A look at some proven complementary therapies, not meant to replace conventional treatment, but to help cancer patients thrive.
September 2nd: Gynecological Cancers: “What you need to know about your Gynecological Health” We all know about our breast health...but what about the 'Below the Belt' cancers? What healthy, what's not. Your Pap smear only tests for cervical cancer, not uterine or ovarian. Everything you've been afraid to ask...and everything your mother didn't tell you.
October 7th: Hereditary Cancer & Genetics: "The Angelia Jolie Effect” Whether you are a cancer survivor or not, you or your family members may have questions about the risk of developing cancer. What you need to know and do to protect yourself. Mollie Hutton, MS, CGC from Roswell Parks Genetics Department and High Risk Cancer Specialists will be on hand to talk about the importance of seeing a Certified Genetic Counselor, getting good genetic testing, as well as screening programs for ‘high risk’ individuals.
November 4th: Clinical Trials & the latest Research: “Myth Busting” Are they safe? Effective? What’s happening in cancer research today? You will have an opportunity to learn from top researchers as well as directly from patients who have been on clinical trials.
May 9th & 10th 2014: WNY Ovarian Cancer Project 2nd Annual Geranium Sale: We will be taking orders for Beautiful Potted Geraniums soon, for pick up at various in May. This event funds our ‘Comfort & Hope Totes”! Stay tuned for the details!
June 6th 2014: 2nd Annual Girls Night Out Fundraiser Sponsored by Dr. Juliana Marciniak of Peak Performance Chiropractic: Dr. Marciniak and her team are doing it again! Throwing the best and most fun Girls Night Out ever! Lot's of vendors with goodies to buy, delicious food, wine and FUN! September 5th 2014: WNY Ovarian Cancer Project’s 2nd Annual Lighting of Niagara Falls in Teal and “The Journey" Candlelight Ceremony honoring all Women with Ovarian Cancer and those who have passed. June 12 – 14, 2014 8th Annual Joining Forces Conference on Hereditary Breast & Ovarian Cancer, Philadelphia, PA Joining Forces’ Against Hereditary Cancer is an international conference designed by and for people and families affected by hereditary cancer or a BRCA mutation. The conference will present a wide range of topics and the latest research on these cancers. Our 2014 program will be held in partnership with Penn Medicine’s Basser Research Center for BRCA. The conference will provide participants opportunities to enroll in research, including Basser-funded studies. Attendees include people concerned about hereditary cancer: survivors, previvors, people with a BRCA mutation or family history of cancer, patient advocates, researchers, and health care providers who treat high-risk patients. July 11-14 2014: 17th Annual Ovarian Cancer National Alliance Conference. The WNY Ovarian Cancer Project is a Proud Partner Member of the Alliance and each year, the Alliance hosts the largest ovarian cancer-specific conference in the nation, bringing together researchers, clinicians, survivors and caregivers to learn about the latest developments in diagnosis, treatment and quality of life.
