2014 CANCER ANSWERS:  Throughout 2014 we will be holding a series of FREE programs relative to ALL cancer survivors. The sessions feature experts from our community talking about issues pertinent to the daily lives of cancer patients, our caregivers and friends.

Tuesday, April 1st: Nutrition: "Don't tell me what not to eat, tell me what to eat!" We all know that eating healthy is a way to help prevent cancer...but now that you have cancer what should you eat? Is it only green smoothies, green tea and organic for us? Cancer patients are bombarded with the media & well meaning folks about what to eat now that they've had a diagnosis of the Big C. In this program you will learn from the experts, what to eat, some great meal ideas for both you and your family, and how to do it without breaking your budget.

Tuesday, June 3rd: Understanding Chemotherapy Side Effects: What are the causes of chemotherapy side effects? How to manage; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, hair loss, pain, neuropathy, mouth sores, and more. You will get practical tips from experts on how to deal with these and other short and long-term side effects.

Tuesday, August 5th: Complementary Medicine: "What's quackery, what's not" A look at some proven complementary therapies, not meant to replace conventional treatment, but to help cancer patients thrive. What is Reiki? Tai Chi? What is a Holistic approach?

Tuesday, September 2nd: 'Below the Belt" - Gynecological Cancers: "What you need to know about your Gynecological Health" We all know about our breast health...but what about other female cancers? What's healthy, what's not? Your Pap smear only tests for cervical cancer, not uterine or ovarian. Everything you've been afraid to ask...and everything your mother didn't tell you.

With Experts: Dr. Stacey Akers, Gynecologic Oncologist from the Piver Center for Women's Health & Wellness at Catholic Health & Roswell Park Cancer Institute & Dr. David Marchetti, Gynecologic Oncologist from CCS Oncology

Tuesday, October 7th: Hereditary Cancer & Genetics: "The Angelia Jolie Effect" Whether you are a cancer survivor or not, you or your family members may have questions about the risk of developing cancer. If my cousin has cancer, do I need to worry? What put's me at risk? What you need to know, what discussions are important to have with family members and who are the experts you should see to protect yourself and your family. The importance of seeing a Certified Genetic Counselor, getting good genetic testing, as well as screening programs for 'high risk' individuals.

With Experts: Mollie Hutton, MS, CGC from Roswell Parks Genetics Department and High Risk Cancer Specialists Dr. Peter Frederick & Dr. Jessica Young from the High Risk Gynecological Cancer Screening Clinic and the High Risk Breast Cancer Screening Clinic.

Tuesday, November 4th: Clinical Trials & the latest Research: "Myth Busting" Are Clinical Trials safe? Effective?  What's happening in cancer research today, how close are we to a Cure? This is a unique opportunity to learn from the Top Researchers and ask them questions on where we've been and where we're going on the road to curing cancer.

With Experts: Dr. Kunle Odunsi, MD, PhD Chief Gynecologic Executive, Director of the Center for Immunotherapy and Co-Leader of the Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy research program.  Dr. Myron Czuczman, MD, Department of Medicine Head, Lymphoma Translational Research Laboratory, Department of Immunology & Christine Ambrosone, PhD Chair of the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control, and co-leader of the CCSG Population Sciences Program all from Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

2014 National Events:

June 12 - 14, 2014 8th Annual Joining Forces Conference on Hereditary Breast & Ovarian Cancer, Philadelphia, PA Joining Forces' Against Hereditary Cancer is an international conference designed by and for people and families affected by hereditary cancer or a BRCA mutation. The conference will present a wide range of topics and the latest research on these cancers. Our 2014 program will be held in partnership with Penn Medicine's Basser Research Center for BRCA. The conference will provide participants opportunities to enroll in research, including Basser-funded studies. Attendees include people concerned about hereditary cancer: survivors, previvors, people with a BRCA mutation or family history of cancer, patient advocates, researchers, and health care providers who treat high-risk patients.
